Ok.....contender #1 sushi...my good 'ol standard favorite food. It lives in little Japanese restaurants, covered in fish eggs, seaweed, sesame seeds, masked with pickled ginger and wasabi. We eat it with soy sauce and edamame, we drink saki and green tea. Sipping slowly waiting for the perfect rolls to arrive. Then once they come, we wolf them down, barely chewing the giant rice stuffed and nori wrapped assortment. Raw fish, and Japanese oddities like "Buddha Balls", lotus root go down without much question. We sit and wipe our mouths while the rice slowly expands inside, swelling our guts until suddenly we all say "Ok, I think this will be the last one." Then we pack up the leftovers...which there always are and eat our little orange slices, or chocolate mint, say "Arigato!" or the like and head out the door ducking under indigo dyed curtains, escaping back out into the street, glazed and over stuffed.
Contender #2 squshi...."what?" you say. Well in my house the recently coined name comes from combining the squishi innards of the nori and the name the vegan delights resemble....sushi. We wrap other oddities, like kombocha sqaush, sprouted sunflower seeds which were blended up with avocado and cilantro, hemp seeds, ginger, and other veggies. This time we sit, accompanied by salad, nama shoyu, and water. They say "Yuuuuummmm, what is in this?" and I respond "Rabbit food", we all laugh and then eat until we are perfectly full, the overstuffed feeling never comes. Satisfyingly vegan....this is a hard balance. How to eat grain free, and vegan and get full and feel like we ate well and had plenty of flavors in the mix.
Squishi Recipes
avocadoes
nori
carrots-grated
cabbage sliced thin
cilantro
pickled ginger
sauteed shitakes
sauteed zuchinni
sliced cucumber
steamed squash if desired
hemp seeds
For the "rice"
soak almonds or sunflower seeds for a few hours or overnight to begin the sprouting process
blend in cuisinart for a few minutes
mix with a bit of olive oil, salt, wasabi powder, chopped cilantro, avocado rice wine vinnegar or whatever you like really.
Another "rice" variation is to chop jicama and cucumbers and hemp seeds up real fine with some salt and spread out on the nori.
Add in your favorite veggies from above and roll up. Slice and serve with pickled ginger and nama shoyu- a raw variety of soy sauce. A little saki never hurts. Peace and squshi.

Life is like an onion....with the tears
Wow! Its been a while, seems like life is much to busy to blog to the universe about me! So, here I am trying to find something to say amid near ascension, earthquakes, spring that sprung up like a cricket in the grass, gardening, children, the journey to god parenthood, camping, dieting, cleansing, colonics, chaos, survival and peace of mind. To many things going on sometimes I wonder is this productive to be so busy, or would I be better serving my family to cut back.
Downloading and purging
My goal really to cut back on everything, be more sustainable, live right, do right, clean up clean out...blah blah. So in my effort to re-evaluate all of this have come to re-learn that nothing really means anything unless you have your heart in it, and I thought telling all to you is a good way to allow you in to whats in my heart. But on the whole, whats in my heart is to be true to myself, serve my community and my family as best as possible. So this is a catch 22.
I am really unnerved by all this speeding up of life, where does one begin and end their day, their journey? Where do I focus my energy? This push and pull can be quite overwhelming, I feel like a rubber band. Friends talk of the environment, the trash, the eco friendly ways to be, the angering issues out there, the better things to do to make a difference. I am stumped really. The only answer I know of for sure is that if people were happy, loving and pouring all of that intention out into the universe then the world would be a healthy healed wonderful place with peace and no strife.
That's what I am trying to do ultimately. Pour love out and receive it back, feeling blessed and then maybe I will feel better and everyone around me will also. This will be contagious, we will all be overwhelmed by love and gratitude allowing it in, giving it out. Giving sharing, loving, happy.
Pondering
I put my hands in the dirt on a sunny mountain day. The wind gently blows the pollen through my hair. I smell the remnants of early moist meadow wildflowers. Others are only beginning their parched bloom on the hill, thriving in the dry grass. I wonder; they come and go, they thrive in the conditions provided by mother nature, she may only allot a smidgen of a spring one year and others it seems to never end. But they come back every year. They thrive, they make do. Who are we to be greedy and ask for more than we need. I can make do with this sparse drop of water cant I? I can hold my colorful petals high in the tall grass and still be strong enough to hold up the passing butterfly or scurrying beetle.
It feels like a haiku
Change
the rain and dew
made flowers bright and tall
drought comes soon
Amber grain
life in motion
grass waves in the wind
on meadows wide
The Bleeding Heart
empty casing clings
the flowers heart bleeds
while waiting
I was a five day camp trip in gold country with 17 10 year olds last week. Some of the children hike uphill very slow. I was becoming annoyed until I remembered I like poetry i nature, I enjoy photographing. Take Pictures! Hello! Why complain and hurry the hike? Only to arrive an hour before anyone with an empty memory card? Never. I found so many inspiring freaks in nature, some amazing anomalies, some perfect moments. Then the children joined in, searching for things that need a picture of them. They said we all have pictures of us, do you think the flowers mind if no one takes their picture? I said they would never know the difference, but lets take them anyways. Above is a bleeding heart who has been patiently waiting until decomposition for the hanging empty bug casing falls off. A leaf painted on a log by the rain, the smallest banana slug in a row of big ones...always an opportunity to slow down and appreciate.

Poor neglected blog
Hello everyone...It has been a while. So busy with life and fun I forgot about blogging. We have been doing many amazing things lately and I want to tell you about some of them.
Chickens-
A few weeks ago I signed up with some local farmers to buy chickens from them weekly at the farmers market. They are a little more expensive this way but way more local, and fresh than store bought ones. Basically a chicken at the coop is $16-20 and these are 5 for $90 or 10 chickens for $180 and you get a bonus chicken! I am trying to find more and more ways to support the local economy and utilize the resources around us more efficiently. You may be able to do the same type of CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in your area. Just do a quick internet search or go to your local farmers market. www.mendocinoorganicscsa.com. is where I am getting them with Adam Gaska.
Ancient Living Skills-
We just attended a workshop for families the I hosted at our Waldorf school the Waldorf School of Mendocino County. www.mendocinowaldorf.org. Tamara Wilder is a Paleotechnologist who teaches groups of people how to get back to our roots and learn skills for survival and for fun. We learned how to make string from plant fibers, drill holes in pine nuts to make beads, drill holes in soapstone to make beads, and then string them on our twine to make necklaces. The one with the most beads is the richest person in the group, that means you have the most leasure time to sit around and make them.
String making
We also made ropes, a four person job, but really industrious. The kids made ropes for their jump ropes at school.
We also made fires by friction, super hard and very satisfying once you get it! The whole process is very detailed, a whole book really, but I learned so much about the energy you put into the fire, the force it takes and all the elements needed to make it successful. This is a photo of Tamara making a fire from rubbing her hands together over the stick, which creates a bit of sawdust that falls out of the hole in the bottom of the other stick with notches. The friction creates heat and over the course of a minute there will be enough ht sawdust in the pile it will ignite and you will have a little coal. Then you dump the coal into your tinder bundle, made of various dry materials, and then poof! A fire! My hands are totally sore from trying so hard. But it was so satisfying. I can survive and create a fire on my own if needed. Go to her website www.paleotechnics.com where you can find a schedule of her classes, resources and other events.

Cell Phones-
The other big change I am making for my personal health is using a hands-free heat reducing headset for my cell phone. Since a cell phone is my only phone option out here in the country I am forced into using one. I do a lot of business and personal calls, but am trying to do more texting as a better option for reducing my radiation. But eh headset I have is an ENVI RF3, it is made from recycled materials, and has a clear tube that brings the sound, but reduces the heat going directly into your head. They come with adapters for most every phone out there. Go to www.cellularfactory.com or search for the ENVI RF3 headset or heat reducing headset to get one. Better safe than sorry!
Food-
So we are sticking to a varied diet now, very light, mucho greenery and less meat. Little or no grains, no dairy still and lots of raw, vegan and live foods. We have had an interesting week of cheating due to company and parties. This again taught us lessons about what not to do on a regular basis. It is amazing how after not eating wheat, and then having pasta and garlic bread I feel like shit, have a headache, bloated, gassy and just overall uck! So today we are back to business......good food, colonics again, light and fresh. I have been doing some fun food making and sharing this last few weeks. I have been making lettuce wraps with various goodies inside. But this is a fabulous way to get away from tortillas.
Spicy lettuce Wraps
6-8 large lettuce leaves will feed two hungry adults
make a platter of your favorite veggies like cilantro, avocados, cucumber, tomatoes, radishes etc.
saute veggie up if not doing all raw, like jalapenos, onions, mushrooms, zuchinis and place them in the wrap, add fresh veg, and salsa. Soooooo tasty!
Enjoy! Blog at cha soon...

Post cleanse recap and yummy pies!
So the cleanse week was interesting. We learned a lot about how to not just dive into big changes. But there is always that adjustment period where you may be uncomfortable, have gas, have a detox reaction, be fatigued. I realized my body does not do very well without animal protein, it is hard for me to get all my protein needs with nuts, seeds, and beans. I can not have fruit very much anymore for a while to get rid of the yeast overgrowth in my system, so if I am down to veggies, nuts and seeds I will go crazy real quick. So I added animal proteins in and I feel good. Jamie is trying to stick to only having animal proteins here and there maybe once a week or so. Overall I feel good, just a bit frustrated. This was the week of change and strange time perception issues (my clock reset itself so that we were late, people were running late and getting times confused a lot). People seem very sensitive and easily upset. Something in the stars, so it was good week to purge, clear out old cobwebs etc. Anyways, moving on to more layers of this onion, at the center is pure, healthy, clear, amazing beauty.

Well I was going to make a chocolate sauce for the top of mine, but you could also do just pureed blackberries with a smidge of cornstarch to help it jell up. This tangy fruit will make it so delicious...just explore a bit.
Enjoy!

Day 7 of Challenge
Ok, so detoxing can kick your ass!
In case you have never gone through any kind of detox before, take it easy, schedule your time well so that you can relax, rest, sleep, get a break from kids etc. Today I am doing better, feeling good gut wise.
Jamie is feeling better, just in general wipe out from colonics and lymes detox.
Hard to know where to stop once you figure out where your issues are. One step at a time is probably a bit easier. I am really looking forward to some animal protein tomorrow...maybe even tonight since we are going out to eat. We will see..... The sun is out and the garden is going off...so I will find some herbs and useful garden allies today as I weed the over abundant weeds.
Cleavers (sticky monkey)
Morning shake
cleavers
kale
papaya
banana
coconut butter
water and ice
probiotics
strawberries
Cleavers are a good kidney tonic and helpful as a diuretic as well. Read on for some more uses. Right now they are abundant in my yard, use them while you got em!

Properties
Cleavers is edible and medicinal, it has been used for centuries as an alternative medicine by indigenous peoples on many continents. It is edible raw though said to be unpalatable, mainly used as a pot-herb or as an addition to soups. Using the plant as a vegetable has a slimming effect on the body. Cleavers seed is one of the best coffee substitutes, it merely needs to be dried and lightly roasted and has much the same flavor as coffee. Cleavers has a long history of use as an alternative medicine and is still used widely by modern herbalists. It is used both internally and externally in the treatment of a wide range of ailments. The dried or fresh herb is alterative, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, aperient, astringent, depurative, diaphoretic, diuretic, febrifuge, tonic and vulnerary. A valuable diuretic, it is often taken to treat skin problems such as seborrhoea, eczema and psoriasis, and as a general detoxifying agent in serious illnesses such as cancer. The plant contains organic acids, flavonoids, tannins, fatty acids, glycoside asperuloside, gallotannic acid and citric acid. It has a mild laxative effect and stimulates the lymphatic system and has shown benefit in skin related problems. The fresh plant or juice is used as a medicinal poultice for wounds, ulcers and many other skin problems. An infusion of the herb has shown of benefit in the treatment of glandular fever, tonsilitis, hepatitis and cystitis. The infusion is also used to treat liver, bladder and urinary problems. The plant contains the valuable constituent asperuloside, a substance that is converted into prostaglandins by the body. Prostaglandins are hormone-like compounds that stimulate the uterus and affect blood vessels. Much more scientific research is being done on the plant it is of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry.

Day 5 of Challenge
This shit is hard! Ok so I thought I could aimlessly walk into a nice vegan and raw diet....slam...wrong!
So Day 3 was alright until at the end of dinner, I got a horrid gas cramp in my tummy, spent about 30 min on the toilet massaging labor like gas pains. Bad pain, fatigue, gas, headache...arg! So the next day (day 4) I went to have a colonic. That was great. I went to Kai Bravo, you have to go to her! See the resources page to find her info. We discovered I have much yeast! She also said to not go totally raw yet...Which we are not going to for more than here and there. She said to do more of a yeast free diet, less fruit, more water, less kale and brasicas due to my thyroid issue. So I already pretty much knew this and so am now backing down on the raw part of the raw/vegan challenge due to Kai's recommendation. She said usually people need to wade in with more trepidation that we had. Go slow, go easy. Well basically we did I thought, the last 3 months doing a lot of veggies, green drinks etc. were a challenge in and of itself. Then we went grain free almost 80%, aside from rice in sushi here and there. So this next step took us to more straight raw veggies, lots of nuts and more dedicated green drinks. We cut out animal protein as well. This did not seem like a big difference to me, but my gut thinks otherwise. Jamie had a colonic, feeling wiped out and achy. He has also been bumping up his lymes herbs and things, so that can be part of this. His stomach is a bit crampy and gassy. He has also had a low grade headache and feeling dizzy also. Hard to say what the symptoms are from, lymes meds or food changes.
So we backed down, yesterday was a mild raw day, cooked dinner of green beans, mushrooms and garlic saute'd w olive oil and salt, steamed yams, and a salad. Simple yet super good. Felt fine last night, and today am feeling way better. We started with a nice green drink and a bit of fruit. A leftovers lunch and a smoothie.
So the lesson here....do things slower.
I have to cut down on fruit and go yeast free. This is gonna be real hard. So, next level of awareness brings the next level of challenges.
New Green Drink
red leaf lettuce (5 leaves)
pear
mango juice
apple and celery
hemp powder
ice and water
A bit bitter but refreshing.
